CGC License

Certified General Contractor

The most comprehensive construction license in Florida

A Florida Certified General Contractor (CGC) holds the broadest construction license issued by the Florida DBPR. A CGC can perform, manage, or supervise virtually any type of construction work anywhere in the state — residential, commercial, or industrial — with no limitations on project size or scope. If you're planning a major renovation, addition, or new construction project, a CGC is typically the right contractor to lead it.

What a CGC Can Do

Under Florida Statute §489.105(3)(a), a Certified General Contractor may perform any type of construction work, subject only to the licensee's competency. This includes:

  • New residential construction of any size
  • New commercial and industrial construction
  • Any building addition or expansion
  • Structural alterations, demolitions, and renovations
  • Foundation work, concrete, and framing
  • Site work, grading, and utilities (in coordination with specialty trades)
  • Managing and coordinating all sub-trades (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, roofing)
  • Historic preservation and restoration projects
  • Disaster repair and storm damage reconstruction

  • 1Must be at least 18 years old
  • 2Minimum 4 years of experience in the construction industry, including at least 1 year in a supervisory capacity

Why Homeowners Should Hire a Licensed CGC

For any project involving structural changes, multiple trades, permits, or significant investment, a CGC provides comprehensive project management and legal accountability. The CGC is the party legally responsible for ensuring all work meets the Florida Building Code, all permits are pulled and closed, and all sub-trades are licensed and supervised appropriately. Working with a CGC also means clear recourse through Florida's DBPR complaint process if problems arise.

What to Look for When Hiring

  • Active "CGC" license number verifiable through FloridaContractorCheck or DBPR
  • Current general liability insurance ($300,000+ per occurrence recommended)
  • Workers' compensation coverage for all employees
  • Experience with your specific project type (residential, commercial, renovation)
  • Local references from similar projects completed within the last 2 years
  • Willingness to provide a detailed written contract and pull all required permits
  • No significant disciplinary history on their DBPR record
